Copp Impressive in Debut

April 30, 2002

Sophomore Ryan Copp threw 5 shutout innings in his first varsity start as a pitcher, allowing just 2 hits, while striking out 5 and walking none. The Rangers scored 7 runs in the second and coasted to a 10-0 win over the Lakers which was stopped after 5 innings because of the mercy rule. The game was played in Lake Region because Greely's field was not playable due to the recent rain.

Senior John Blackie got the offense going with a RBI triple in the second. Aron Brooks followed with a RBI single, and Ryan Burke and Nick Curato added RBI doubles in the second. Brent Lemieux added a two run homer in the fourth and Halsey Lea doubled and scored on John Blackie's fielder's choice to cap the scoring.

Close to a loss, Greely gets a win

CUMBERLAND — After giving the game away for six innings Wednesday, the Greely baseball team decided to take it back. Mark Baumer belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to pull the unbeaten Rangers into a tie.

Then Ryan Copp came through with a clutch hit in the bottom of the eighth to propel Greely to a 7-6 victory against previously unbeaten Gorham in a Western Maine Conference game.

Eric Tanguay of Gorham steals second base Wednesday as Ryan Copp of Greely struggles to control the ball. Greely scored three runs to tie the game in the seventh inning, then won it in the eighth to remain undefeated.
"We did not play our best baseball in the first six innings," said Greely Coach Derek Soule. "We were sloppy."

As the Rangers came to their final at-bat in the seventh, Soule challenged them.

"I challenged them to show me they were competitors, to show me some pride," he said, "and they showed a lot to me in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth."

Gorham (4-1) took a 6-3 lead into the seventh, but it wasn`t enough.

After Sam Nelson of Greely (4-0) reached on Gorham`s fourth error and Brent Lemieux singled to center, Baumer tied it. He pulled a fastball to the deepest part of the field in left for his first homer of the season.

"It was 3-and-1 so I was looking for a fastball," he said. "I got it a little up so I could drive it."

In the eighth, Lemieux started the winning rally after two outs by lining a bad-hop double down the left-field line for his third hit of the game.

After Baumer was walked intentionally, Copp ended the game by lining a shot over the head of the left fielder to bring Lemieux home.

"The last couple of innings were clutch," said Lemieux, who scored three runs. "Everyone who came to the plate came through."

Losing pitcher Andy Jenkins limited the Rangers to three hits in the first six innings. His teammates built a three-run lead mainly on Greely mistakes.

The Rams scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead for the first time.

With two outs, Andrew Portwine reached on an error and moved to third when Dustin Spiller`s fly fell in among three fielders in left.

An error on a grounder to short produced one run. A walk and Joel Kerschner`s two-run single made it 4-3.

Gorham added a run in the sixth on singles by pinch-hitter Tom Barks and Eric Tanguay, a hit batsman and Spiller`s grounder to second.

The Rams made it 6-3 in the seventh on Ian Schmidt`s double and an error on Jared Gardner`s grounder to third.

"To tell you the truth, I was a little embarrassed during the first six innings," said Soule. "Right now I`m feeling pretty good. I really like how they responded in the face of adversity, so I can`t complain too much."
